Nutritional Scarcity

Bigstock_Poverty_African_Child_1451437

Scarcity mentality(a frame of reference, a state of the mind having nothing to do with reality)

The origin of the word scarcity for me is  scare + ity implies a state of fear Scare comes from the root skirra meaning to frighten  But fear of what? The answer: Not having enough(of anything)

We live currently in one of the most abundant civilizations on the planet yet we live nutritonally in scarcity This observation is predicated on obsession with overeating and buying what we don't need in terms of food and material goods We force food because we fear we won't have enough, perhaps from our parents who lived through the depression

If we don't get enough, something terribe is going to happen And the real danger is that if we feel a certain flavor of fear, we will invariably push that fear onto our kids energetically

I think most will agree that kids are very in tune They sense many things that we as adults gloss over And it is in this setting that children are learning how to do life They are like energy sponges picking up every nuance they observe with all five senses This may not appear to be the case due to their communication abilities but we shouldn't let that deceive us

If we recognize that we are operating from a scarcity mentality that is a huge step in stopping some rather unhealthy eating behaviors

Among many things it does the following:

Reduces the chances that we as parents will force food at our children

         Helps with overeating

         Helps with overbuying

Helps with fasting which helps with digestive fire

Can you see where scarcity plays a role in eating patterns? Can you see how that might play a role in creating childhood habits? Have you seen this play out in your family?

Building Food Addictions

Bigstock_Raccoon_Eathing_Potato_Chip_69578
It's around noontime and I'm ready for the biggest meal of the day

Hmmm…. maybe cook some rice "Boy, am I hungry"

Now I begin rooting

Well, here are some potato chips "Oh, the crinkled kind looks better!"

Those are really good "Bet you can't just eat one or two or three or……"

"Whew, able to eat only three but were they good or what?"

Five minutes later "Those potato chips were really good As a matter of fact they are still lingering in my awareness Am I addicted to that fatty(sour) and salty tastes? I would definitely go back but …."(even racoons above can get addicted to potato chips!!)

Now this dramatic interlude with the potato chip is a descriptor, and I would suspect, fits any one of us as we forage and graze the kitchen cabinets when our aroused appetite is strong

And I'm not here to make this process right or wrong Merely an observation

What's the observation? The one where I had the potato chips and yet the bag harkened me back What I had was not enough I was satisfied with the tastes but my awareness called me back over and over again

This mental process is what I call an addiction to taste and the sweet, sour, and salty tastes are the most powerful addicting tastes that we have as people

The potato is sweet, the fatty acids of the deep fat frying are sour, and the saltiness on the chip brings the food over the top Why do we crave these tastes?

Because they reduce Vata and since we are all Vata aggravated due to the excess mobility in our culture we crave these tastes which slow us down

Can you see this pattern crop up in your day to day activities? Do you think this witnessing could be of value? Would you think that this could stop an addictive process?

Jet Lag and Nutrition

Bigstock_Travelers_At_Airport_2437919

The prevention of jet lag which is a Vata imbalancing activity can benefit from an energy science prescription

Affecting the body clock synchrony by traveling through two or more times zones is a common problem these days  Symptoms such as fatigue, constipation or diarrhea, headache, interrupted sleep patterns can be reduced by doing some simple things but most of all be conscious about making a difference

Here are some tips

Use fresh ginger tea  (reduces Vata and Pitta) before during the flight

            Stay hydrated during the trip

Get a lot of rest before beginning of the trip and after arriving(Vata needs rest)

Do oil massage with Vata/Pitta oil especially day or two before the trip and during the trip(obtain from Ayurvedic Institute 800.863.7721)

Stay to a good daily routine before and during the trip For example if you arrive at your destination at 4pm but the time zone you left from tells you that it's time for bed, go to bed Try to maintain the synchrony that was established in the time zone that you left from

Once at the destination use Good Night Sleep Tea with some mint(can take with you on the trip) Can get from above 800 #

In general getting sick during trips is a result of not honoring who you are namely Vata Pitta By the way easickness is a Vata imbalance!

Above all RELAX and enjoy the trip without getting freaked out

Even doing some of these things can help with the acute imbalance that is created by travel

Happy travels and sweet dreams

Nutrition and Airplane Rides

Bigstock_Airplane_Sunset_5045
Have you ever traveled on an airplane? Most of us have I think – if you haven't try it some time and try an experiement Compare the views from each side of the airplane

I was on a business trip with a friend and we had a great chat on the first long leg of the trip

But on the second shorter junket, we ended up on each side of the aircraft

When we got off the plane in Seattle we compared what we had seen I saw Mt Shasta and Crater Lake and he saw a beautiful view of the top of Mt Ranier surrounded by clouds; I saw forest fires and he didn't; he saw Lake Tahoe and I didn't

Hmmm…. same plane flight yet we saw it entirely differently The scenes were different

I came to realize that our plane trip was a metaphor for life We see things a certain way because that's how we get trained to see things

More specifically we see the mindbody in a matter science way according to the paradigm because that's how we are trained

But if we go to the other side of the plane we can begin seeing the mindbody according to the Vata Pitta Kapha paradigm, that is, an energy science way  Same landscape, different view!

So who's correct in their view Well, both are correct It's just a matter of perspective

Maybe it might be worthwhile to change seats and get a different view?

When Are We Eating Next?

Bigstock_Dinner_Party_1443255

So we're having dinner and the conversation naturally turns to food becuase we eating it!

But the question then comes up, "What are we going to have at the next meal?"

And then, "When are we going to be eating next?"

Now I can understand talking about recipes, preparation of the dish, compliments about the taste and the spices used But to project about future eating plans?

The reason I bring this up is because I have had that specific question about when and what

So the question is still, why?

From my own vantage point I believe that ideation is part of food obsession and unable to get into the present moment of the foods in front of me

I believe that the importance of being fully present inhibits this type of obsessive stream of thought that interferes with the digestive process in the end

Have you ever had such thinking during eating? Do you think that it arises out of fear of not having enough? Can you think of other thoughts that are distractive and interfere with the enjoyment of the present meal time?
