“I Eat Healthy”
One common refrain I often hear from my patients is that "I eat healthy." And we all want to believe that we are doing the very best for our bodies But have we ever stopped to assess what this statement means?
If healthy means eating lots of fruits and vegetables, that might be healthy But some would contend that eating raw vegetables would be even more nutritious Perhaps eating less meat would be considered healthy
Eating fast food might not be considered healthy Or avoiding refined sugar would be healthy Or I only eat organic
All of these statements miss a very important point. Whether corn is organic, the vegetable is raw, the meat is buffalo or the fast food is nutritious, the food to be healthy must resonate with our own individual physiologies So corn, even if organic, if it doesn't resonate with my physiology(and for me it doesn't) then I shouldn't be eating it And the same with tomato
Currently there is no nutritional system that has guidelines grounded in a science that globally addresses the individual nutritional needs of the human physiology And we will not find it in our present matter science nutritional system
The reason for this is actually quite simple Our matter field nutritional information is not a system, but rather a collection of data about the foods we ingest The guidelines come from a level where a quantitative assessment of foods consumed is paramount
We know a lot about broccoli, the number of calories per gram, the number of carbohydrates per gram, the vitamin and mineral content but this quantitative analysis cannot tell me if broccoli resonates with MY physiology I just know a lot about broccoli
From an energy science view, I understand foods from a qualitative viewpoint So what is healthy for me may not be so healthy for you from an energy science perspective I could use banana once or twice a week but for another individual, banana should never be consumed because it would produce imbalance
I shouldn't eat tomatoes or corn but some other friend, she could use them in moderation So you see it is the qualitative character of the food that makes it relatively good or not so good for us This is the value of the energy science nutritional approach And it's a great gift that the energy sciences have given us because it gives us direction for our nutrition and removes all the confusion about nutrition
When we begin eating foods that resonate with our physiologies then we will be able to say, "I eat healthy." The energy science tradition of Ayurveda can give us these much needed guidelines The explanation of this rich energy science is explored in my new book Foods Heal
Have you ever had "reactions" to foods and thought it was an allergy? Have you had foods that didn't cause a reaction but then did? Do you think at times you have food allergies?

Ice Is Not Nice and Digestive Fire
So we go to a restaurant and the first thing that the server does is put down some ice water and says, "Enjoy your meal!"
To a casual observer this seems innocuous enough Hey, it's just water with ice and besides I'm feeling a little hot anyways
Yes, that's true but consider that always doing something a certain way could lead to some untoward consequences You see if health is the compilation of all our decisions then small decisions like ice can add up to affecting digestive fire and compromising it
So temporarily the gastrointestinal enzyme system is reduced in its ability to deal with foods because the enzymatic reactions are thermally sensitive The system works best at 98.6F not 92 or 93F This temporary reduction in efficiency is problematic over the long term
Digestive fire is a collective term for all the enzyme systems from the mouth to the colon It is responsible for turning broccoli into heart, brain and liver cells among other activities
When we alter energetic physiologic processes over and over and over again we disrupt the health of the energy mindbody.
So food that would be turned into fine ash with a strong healthy digestive fire now being compromised leaves charred debris and remains that interferes with future digestion
The phrase "I just have a little bit of cancer" comes to mind
Paying attention to details is how to improve and maintain health
Have you ever made the observation that something that was small and seemingly incidental led to you feeling bad? Can you remember feeling bad and pointing to one particular choice?

Balance
Balance as defined in the energy science means free of stagnant energy, that is, the flow of energy through the physiology is unimpaired The tissues function well and wastes are properly eliminated
Psychologically, what does this look like? Well, there's trust that decisions that are made are appropriate and meaningful, leading to confidence about life's course We look for creative ways of doing things without struggle, unafraid of taking on new challenges
Emotionally, there's acceptance of what comes one's way, taking responsibility for what occurs, and defenseless about the positions we take
Balance is what occurs when we nourish ourselves using energy science nutrition It naturally occurs because Nature will unavoidably seek balance given no provocation
So what we are saying is, do balancing things, and then get out of the way
Have you had the above experience of balance? And have you experienced when things are not in balance? Currently do we talk about such a concept when discussing health?

Mathematical Models and Health
Recently I was sitting next to the guest speaker from the NIH who was speaking about mathematical models that were being developed to predict success of treatment for particular malignancies
"Is it possible that we are giving patients the wrong message when we predict for them?" I asked.
"Not really. Because people are guided by statistics that give them a window of what may come", he responded.
:"But perhaps we are introducing a nocebo effect for patients even though they don't know it."
Placebo means "to please" and nocebo would have the opposite effect An unintended negative response to the news about the statistical likelihood of poor survival could result when the matter science medical model reports the findings
Statistics are just that Numbers that come from models that have been developed about disease processes But none of us are a statistic We are human mindbodies who have free will and the ability to change our human course
There are so many predictions about the future which never come true So buyer beware of future predictions There may be benefit in not totally relying on a medical model that predicts
Have you ever had a prediction not come true? Do you think that predictions can help us? Do they help or hinder us?

“Lose Weight Diets” And Energy Science Nutrition
In our need to control our weight problems over the last three decades there have been and will continue to be the diets to lose weight And now weight loss or bariatric surgery is being used for difficult recalcitrant cases
And within each is a stroke of brilliance that hits upon a molecular formula that in someway effects the physiology in a positive way so that weight loss occurs
There are positive benefits to the weight loss in terms of regained self esteem, feeling attractive, ease in relationships All of these things occur but unfortunately very often the discipline for the program breaks down and weight gain is the invariable result
I would submit in each of these programs even operative procedures there is a gem of energy science that sparkles and shows forth its brilliance It works
But the short term is not long term
Because these programs are not grounded on a foundation of fundamental energy science nutritional principles they become short term not long term solutions to the Kapha imbalance
The key to creating a nutritional program is to ground it on sound energy science nutritional tenets Then it will have the desired result, weight loss but along the way balance that will have untoward benefits in other areas of life as well
In this way losing weight is not the goal Balance and lifestyle eating behaviors is a process and, oh by the way, we lose weight
This is the new growing paradigm for those of us who deal with the global overweight issue
Have you had problems with weight gain after losing weight? What did you learn from the experience? Can your knowledge help others who are on a similar journey?
