Energetic Nutrition: Green Beans and Asparagus

The energy science discipline of nutrition states that not every food on the planet is fair game

But a corollary states that some foods can be used by everyone  Possibly chocolate, I hope?? Unfortunately not

But green beans and asparagus fall into that category in which foods can be used by everyone What makes them such special veggies?

From an energy view both these along with cilantro and leaks, bring grounding for Vata, the energy pattern of mobility, cooling for the hot quality of Pitta, and the dry vibrational frequency to decrease the liquid congestive quality of Kapha

So we can see that the energy view of foods is completely different from that of the matter science nutritional approach to food

"But it's so different" we whine It will require us to change how we view foods! Just too much of a stretch

Yes, that's all possibly true for some but how's the present situation working for us? I would submit not very well We need a different system of nutrition which answers our physiologic needs more completely

What can we take from the above

        1 For a food to be complete and balancing for everyone it has to effect each major energy pattern in a balancing way

        2 Few foods can balance the primary energy patterns in such a unique way

        3 Using asparagus and green beans with leaks and cilantro this time of year when they are locally in season is incredible nutrition for us!!

Wrinkled Fingertips

Have we ever noticed the skin of our fingertips becoming wrinkled and wondered why? Must be due to being in the water because everytime I get out of the bathtub or pool my fingertips are wrinkled But actually it's the expression of the cold vibrational frequency or quality

Biologically from a matter science view what's the difference? Who cares? It's not as important as dealing with someone who's having a heart attack and needs emergent life supporting measures We get caught up in the drama, don't we?

But in the subtle nature of the energy sciences this is where it's happening because I would suggest that unless we begin paying attention to the subtle nature and use that information for healing we will continue to have to deal with increasing frequency the health melodramas of life

What if I were to make the outrageous statement that wrinkled fingertips have everything to do with coronary artery dis-ease and that heart attack which produces our dramas?

The cold quality is the expression of Vata that is directly related to poor circulation and potentially indicates excess sympathetic load(not good)

We only know a quality by contrast Only know the hot quality by cold and the cold quality by hot because we only can know and understand Nature in her expressions of opposites

The point is that until we begin conversations around the mindbody energy field we will continue our lack of understanding about the physiologic observations we make Such as wrinkled fingertips

Talk is cheap We need to find that experience that validates the knowledge about the biologic energy field Otherwise the information is not practical, useful, or pragmatic

Things to do to reduce this biologic Vata energy and wrinkled fingertips around energy science nutrition

        1 Stay warm(hot) so we don't lose energy

        2 Eat warm oily foods and avoid cold raw foods

        3 Heavy foods are best such as dairy and root veggies

        4 Reduce stress and consider meditation

The Addictive Nature of Taste

My wife once told me, "I feel so airy at times that I wish someone would just come and sit on me."

What she was describing was the unsettling feeling that occurs with Vata imbalance, that is too much movement in the mindbody, leading to anxiety and nervousness.

The nutritional energetic antidote to this unsettled feeling are the energetic tastes sweet, sour, and salty.

Hey, what a minute that's fast food. That's the American diet!

Yep, sugar(sweet), salt and fat(sour) are addictive. Ask most any fellow human being walking on the planet and she/he will tell you, "These are the tastes that make foods and drink taste good."

But I would submit that we are seeking these tastes out energetically for a very legitimate reason. We are seeking to ground our energetic mindbody physiologies due to the hectic lifestyles we lead, that is, we are self medicating our Vata imbalances from an energetic point of view.

How could a matter science nutritional approach come to such a conclusion? It can't because it is founded on an incomplete way of viewing the physiology.

This is to remind us that it's not the fast food chains that are the culprits.

We have met the enemy and it is our choices and our lifestyle. 

You know what is amazing? That when we begin eating energetically and nutritionally, we begin to feel grounding, intuitively and instinctively. And we want more of it because our mindbody insists on moving toward balance which by taste means that we don't exclude the other tastes of pungent, bitter, and astringent.

“Clean Your Plate, Billy”

There are many different cues that we grew up with that are now so remote that we may not even be aware of them I received the "You're a good person IF you finish all the food in front of you" The reward for parental approval when growing up can often be around food From this I am prone to overeating

My wife received the message "Why are these people so fat?" She still carries anorexic tendencies

Sometimes these messages will never be uncovered but nonetheless they shape our eating patterns

And this is not to rag on my mother or any parent but to point out the subtleties of messaging that we pick up in childhood At the time it's impossible to interpret whether that message is something we want to carry with us through a lifetime

Since today is my birthday and I'm blogging about nutrition it caused me to reflect on what are the issues that we carry along through life that sculpt our attitudes around food

Here are some reminders

        1 Most habits are well neurologically established before age 4 years!

        2 So it's not direct verbal comments to the infant and toddler but indirect messaging ie what we say about food, how we hurry feeding, how we push feeding; in general what attitudes we demonstrate to our infants and toddlers

         3 As a nutritionally mindful parent we should be assessing "What messaging hasn't worked well for me and do I want to continue this messaging along to my children directly or indirectly"

        4 And what do I do now to change the messaging Open frank discussions I think can be valuable

Taste and Tablets

I use a commonly prescribed bowel herb called triphala which balances the energy patterns in the gut at the stomach, small and large bowel levels

I have always used it as a powder herb either taking it directly or making a tea Either way I experience the taste of the herb

Awhile back I had run out and went to a local outlet and couldn't find the powder and settled for tablets of the same

What a difference!

I decided to mortar and pestil the tablets so that I wanted could access the taste An incredible difference in the product and what I had previously experienced as the true herb in terms of the taste

The bottom line to my short vignette is that taste begins the digestive process It energetically sends a message to the energy mindbody of the herb's physiologic effect and has a direct and immediate impact on the physiology Using tablets interferes with that impactful moment of ingestion

Interestingly as we pay attention to the taste of triphala it will change as the mindbody gets healthier and free of stagnant energy It then tastes sweet All other tastes that triphala will generate indicate the mindbody's deficits of the plasma layer of the blood

So whenever possible experience the real McCoy when taking herbs and spices
