The Power of Joy and Pleasure
Statement #1 If you don't avoid these "unhealthy foods" or these chemically contaminated foods, you have a very high chance of getting cancer or some other bad disease Statistics show it
Statement #2 If you try to eat according to this format, you have a good chance of having an enjoyable healthy life
OK, which statement makes you feel empowered and wanting to participate?
Statement #1 Scare tactic Statement #2 Promise of joy and health
"Living longer or is it going to seem longer"is not necessarily something we respond to
There is much more motivation for change when there is joy of living rather than a promised fear
These are tacits taken by Dean Ornish and he makes a very provocative argument for our nihilistic approach to motivatioin
That risk factor reduction and prevention is borrrrrrrrring to most people
"I don't care if I live longer I just want to have fun!"
So sustainable changes in helping people with lifestyle behavior eating patterns will be accomplished not by scare tactics but by ensuring that joy of living, freedom, and pleasure are part of the deal
So I would suggest that foods be not only fun but also good for us And the way we find that out is with awareness
When we are aware we can find that certain foods make us feel bad And when that realization occurs foods become both fun and good for us
Have you ever had the experience of eating food that was a "long time friend" that you became aware of that made you feel bad? Have you ever nourished a habit that over time you realized made you feel bad? Were you more likely to make a lifestyle change when you realized you were feeling bad?
Until tomorrow To health as a Skill Love DrBill
