"Mary, it looks from all your tests so far that you have  a nonbacterial inflammation of the bladder," I said

"Well, what can we do about it?  Because I'm miserable"

The choice is yours We can give you some pharmaceuticals that will ease the pain

"Is that all? Isn't there something else? Will the drugs clear the problem?"

"The pharmaceuticals typically don't clear the condition They make the symptoms tolerable"

"If you want to deal with the problem, I think the best option is to use a nutritional approach and to help with the symptoms pharmaceuticals as well  When you're feeling better then the pharmaceuticals have done their job and you can rely on the nutritional work that you started"

Mary paused and considered the options  "Hmmm, well I'm not that uncomfortable  Maybe if I tried the nutrition stuff for awhile and if the symptoms were getting me down I could do something more with the pharmaceuticals?

"Anything works and I think that approach is very reasonable"

I continued, "Using a nutritioanal and herbal approach can be additional to medication but it should be foundational to all healing processes that we undertake  At times however medications and surgery are the early cornerstones of therapy"

This sample dialogue that occurs in my office almost daily now follows the theme that foods are medicines and that treating them as such helps us develop a deep awareness as to how they can impact our physiology

Do you believe foods used properly can be healing? Have you seen the nutritional formats at foodsheal.com? Using foods appropriately for your energy makeup can create a prevention theme to your nutrition
