The Mindbody as a Printout

Every year we get a new mindbody down to the last cell 

The message from this is that we make the same unconscious choices regarding our nutrition and lifestyle choice, we get the same printout 

Make different choices, different printout

The question is obvious  "What kind of choices do I make that are health promoting?"

The Health of the GI Tract

The lifestyle behavioral changes that the energy science talks about are more than what to eat  We become so fixated on molecular makeup of the foods ingested we fail to take into account other aspects of gastrointestinal health

The most important aspect of nutriton is the health of the GI tract  It's unusual how much is written about the foods ingested, how to prepare them, grow them, organic or not organic

But what about the health of the receiver of foods?  We take that for granted somehow believing that our mindbodies are healthy to digest the foods and so just throw it down

Creativity and Lifestyle Behavioral Nutritional Patterns

There are many different ways to assess the health of the GI tract that go beyond the scope of today but simply watching how the function of the gut goes everyday is helpful

One of the easiest ways to help the gut be healthier is to:

            Stop food incompatabilities

            Eat foods that do not aggravate the health of the GI tract

           Liberal use of spices in the form of churans

            Enhancing digestive fire

These simple yet poorly understood concepts of GI health are foundational to starting the journey toward better bowel health

It takes creativity to make this happen  Why creativity?  Because in order to make a change in lifestyle behavior whether it's exercise or our nutritional choices it requires a creative shift in the way we regularly do things  We have to figure out how we're going to do it and then factor that into our lifestyle way of doing the day

In other words we have to be willing to go out the back door, not the same door that we usually use and falling into the same hole and getting the same printout year after year, decade after decade

And I know that it's possible for everyone of us!!

The Decline Effect

Recently I have been working with a very anxious elderly who BTW has urinary symptoms and has responded very well to medicated enemas, having failed with the use of many different antianxiety drugs 

The Energy Science and Anxiety

The use of basti(meidcated enema) is a time honored energy science method of reducing Vata disturbance which is expressed most commonly through nervous system symptoms 

Since the family was at wits end as to what to do for their beloved parent or spouse and the patient was willing, we set off on a course to try to improve the situation

Wow!  Three weeks later the patient is like a new person  Calm, focused, attentive, less depressed, and engaged

The Decline Effect

Which leads me to question, "What kind of impact were the antianxiety drugs having in the first place?"

Jonah Lehrer in a NY Times article, "The Truth is Wearing Out", is asking questions about the present day validity of matter science research and our vignette today brings up his conccern

In the article he looks in depth at 3 specific areas of pharmaceutical research and comes away puzzled by the fact that scientific reproducibility is not often possible

In science for a drug to reach public access there are many hurdles that have to be surmounted in order to show that it has real relevance for a specific disease label

Molecule Science and Energy Science

In our story there was no effect and there could be some legitimate reasons why there were no drug effects seen in my patient   But our situation is no unusual event I would say  That the experience is a microcosm of the greater macrocosm

Is the molecule(pharmaceutical)  treatment the only treatment or is there room for another science that can shed light on the managment of dis-ease?

I personally don't believe that there is deception going on in but the reality is that the matter science is incomplete in terms of how it sees biologic reality  That the matter science model is inadequate for our needs

Public Loss of Confidence in the Matter Science

We know that the nutritional model needs help but there is growing loss of public confidence in its pharma industry as well as manifiested in the Lehrer article

There are many reasons why the nutritional and pharmaceutical model doesn't work  One explanation may be that "one size does not fit all"  There are different energy pattern makeups and so one pharma solution may not be a good fit for all of them

But another may be that the underlying energy field imbalance is too complex and deeply rooted in, say an elderly person, that the imbalance cannot be superficially treated with a molecular prescription

We need and deserve better in our current continuum of life and the energy science approach to the human biology will help move us in that direction

The model has to change!

Causes of Heartburn and Nutritional Treatments

It's called many different things but heartburn is a common problem and the current matter science way of dealing with it is a pill

What We Call It

Although difficult to know for sure I would guesstimate that at least a third to half of us suffer from heartburn from my vantage point in the office

It goes by different terms:  acid indigestion; sometimes as a misnomer, indigestion; thought to be associated with an infection (H pylori); and when symptoms are over the top, gastroesophageal reflux dis-ease(GERD)  But the bottom line is from a matter science view it is not handled very well

Tums and rolaids, baking soda, over the counter acid relief pills, and if pushed to the brink, prescribed pharmaceuticals from the doctor

What About Foods?

But what is surprising to me in the midst of this treatment mileau is the lack of any suggestion that foods produce the problem  Too simple, I guess

Say again  Foods as a problem? What the hay!  NO Way!  How could that be? 

If foods are the culprit, it's a well kept secret that gastroeneterologists keep from their patients because I don't see any of them discussing nutrition with them where I practice

Too Much Hot

The energy science nutritional model has a lot to say about how foods produce dis-ease  As a matter of fact all our choices lead to unarguable and eventual physiologic dis-ease

In previous blogs we have talked about the inevitable consequence of too much of the quality of hot in foods ingested  This provocation done month after month, year after year, decade after decade leads to the symptom of the matter science label of acid indigestion

The matter science states that excess acidity(who knows why) begins to break down the bowel mucosa producing an inflammatory reaction which results in pain and over time to reflux of acid from the stomach up the esophagus and into the throat

Some Have It and Don't Know It

Because of their abundant protective mucous predominant Kapha people may not experience the symptoms of acidity but eventually they break through

The key here is that most everyone not following an energy science nutritional format for their mindbody makeup is provoked even though not symptomatic

Science Fiction and Reality

"Beam me up Scottie" is one of the  common phrases that we remember from Star Trek and trekkies became a group of followers interested in the sci fi of tomorrow

And just as far fetched as Jules Vern was with his novel 20,0000 Leagues Under the Sea, the imagination of today becomes the reality of tomorrow

So just how does Scottie beam Captain Kirk up to the starship Enterprise? Some translation occurs from the matter field into an energy field that can then be translocated through space

Quantum Biology

Now a new term has surfaced that has great relevance for students in the energy science disciplines-quantum biology The dominance of the molecular world is beginning to yield to the energy world Many things cannot be adequately explained by the dance of molecules

Molecules or particles are now being recognized as waves of energy

Our contemporary understanding of the physical laws that govern the universe is that matter and energy are completely interchangeable which leads us to the inevitable conclusion that the human physiology is simultaneously matter and energy fields. Our current biological model entertains only a matter field approach to healing

Contemporary Legitimate Biological Energy Models

Biological models are now being scientifically studied to understand the human biology not as a matter field but as an energy field  The true challenge is to find models that adequately express the energy field concept such as the Ayurvedic model or the  Traditional Oriental Medical(TOM) model

I believe that there are many of us that have no question about the fact that the human biology is indeed an energy field  I have actually in the office never had a patient ask for proof or contest this biologic fact

But there are those of us who have their own idea of how to treat and deal with the mindbody as as an energy field  And many of these approaches don't operate from a validated model

The energy field model of Ayurveda and the information from which Dr Ornish has premised his model of nutritional healing is aligned with such a style of thinking  It's just that his process could be refined to mindbody energy pattern thinking(one size doesn't fit all) but that's a whole different issue

Nutrition in the 21st Century

What kind of relevance does this have for students of nutrition? If the model of what the human physiology changes then so does how we nourish it

A biological paradigm shift is occurring and it will change how we heal and prevent disease

Nutrition and Mental Foibles

Broadly speaking, there are mental structures that we all share such as denial, resentment, love, jealousy, etc  And these structures are permanent, cultural, variable in expression, and are continuum based 

"What in the heck does this have to do with nutrition," one asks  Hang in there for a brief moment and we'll get there, I promise

The Mind and Mental Structures

My son and I were talking over lunch about the differences in the matter science and energy science disciplines and how the matter(molecular) science has such structure around its discipline yet the energy science is more ephemeral

This led to the discussion of mind  Since he's finishing his doctoral program in psychology and even though there is little structure to hang one's hat on, it's clear that the energy field of the mind, though not having substance such as the physical body, can be alloted structure

So resentment can be variable in its expression, shared by everyone(unless you're into another structure called denial), oft times culturally based(more in one than another), and some harbor more than others based on their imbalances

Qualities of Mental Structures

And there are specific qualities about these mental structures and this is where this thought process is leading  These mental structures have the qualities that make up the mindbody energy field

Let's take for an example denial which carries the qualities of Kapha, namely cold, heavy, gross, liquid, slow/dull, hard, cloudy, static, oily, and dense

So how can we reduce our chances for denial  Well, one of the ways is to stop provoking Kapha tendency with Kapha provoking nutrition  Particularly for Kapha predominant individuals using a Kapha pacifying nutritional format would be very useful avoiding those foods that bring about the qualities associated with the above

"Bizarro"you might say  But if the mind and body are intimately spliced, then what happens in the mind happens in the body and vice versa

How about the mental structure of resentment? This is a structure brought about by Pitta imbalance with the qualities of hot, sharp/penetrating, mobile, light, liquid, and oily  So in that setting reducing Pitta aggravating foods in the nutritional format would be helpful

Who says that nutrition cannot impact our mental state? The energy science nutritional medical model says most definitely!

On Call and Stages of Disease

I'll put my matter science hat on today and talk about what it's like to be in the trenches taking care of sick people

Pretty Sick, Huh? 

I get a call late in the day about a lady who presented to the emergency department on death's door from an blood borne infection from the urinary tract   It took two weeks to resuscitate and stabilize her physiology from the repercussions of the infection and off antibiotics she has the appearance of still being infected  Her left kidney is obstructed and I investigated the obstruction

Later on in the early morning a doctor wants to transfer a patient with a small stone that should pass from the ureter into the bladder  Otherwise comfortable she can go home

During the  night a lady is admitted with a bladder full of clot that will need evacuation since it's plugging the catheter and leading to pain  Due to significant peripheral vascular disease of her right leg she needs a blood thinner and this leads to bleeding from an area in the bladder where a previous bladder tumor was removed two weeks prior to her admission

Then in middle of the night of the second day on call of the weekend a transfer from a peripheral hospital ER for a stone in the ureter but when she arrives, oh by the way, she has pneumonia

And the weekend isn't over as I write this

Energy Science Medicine:  The Six Stages of Disease

The reason for elucidating the travails of call is not to cajole or convince you to be healthy but to bring to light the understanding of the spectrum of illness

Our matter science medical discipline of today deals with the final stages(the last 2 as a matter of fact) of disease from an energy science view 

The energy science medical model says that the first 4 stages of disease begin the whole process of illness in the mindbody physiology

And guess where the initiating events of disease begins?  If you have been reading this blog for awhile your answer, the gastrointestinal tract(GI tract or gut) is spost on!

The imbalances that are created by the foods that we choose begins the cascade of events that over time leads to those cases that I enumerated above 

How long does it take for the imbalances to get to the above severe illnesses?  At times decades!

As I watched myself go through the weekend of doing the matter science work I realized that though important this work was for those struggling to simply stay alive  That the matter science work is for those often at the end of the line

Canaries and Nutrition

In the olden days of the mining industry miners would use a canary in the mine tunnels to signal to them whether noxious and possibly fatal gases were present  If the canary wasn't with them any further it was time to don the gas mask and get out!

I would say that within any given population of health conscious consumers there are those who serve as a canary but that we can become canaries ourselves

Nutritional Sensitivity

I'm sure all of us at one time or another have found that certain foods just don't agree with us And due to that we avoid them

Yet there are some foods that we continue to use despite the fact that we know that they are very good for us  Deep fried foods, carbonated drinks, chocolate, McDonald's to name a few

But what if I were to tell you that there could be a time when you simply would not have any desire to eat foods that are not healthy for you 

I would submit that there are those around you who have achieved that level of refinement  There are those of us who quite simply have an aversion to foods that physiologically make them tick, I mean sick

A Canary is Born

This nutritional sensitivity is beneficial for all of us   And achievable for all of us believe the unbelievable or not! 

It's possible to not be a slave to the mind and its pathologic choices  but to let the body tell us what is good and what to avoid  And this requires a form of commitment

Cold Showers and Nutrition

Emphasizing the cold quality to the mindbody can have long range health repercussions

Toughing it out during the winter, jumping into snow banks nude after a sauna, and the proverbial "awakening cold shower" is simply not nurturing to the mindbody physiologic system

Matter Science Understanding of the Cold Quality

The cold primordial vibrational frequency enhances vasoconstriction  Think about it  If cold is applied to the skin the mindbody contracts and tries to preserve its hot quality because of the cold environment  One of the ways the mindbody contracts is by vasoconstriction

Vasoconstriction is an effect of the sympathetic nervous system activity, the fight or flight response  The opposite of fight or flight is calming which is what the parasympathetic nervous system does

Hence applying the cold quality to the mindbody enhances sympathetic or fight or flight response

The Energy Science Understanding of Cold 

In the end the cold quality provokes both energy patterns of Vata and Kapha and a consistent cold provocation particularly during the winter can lead to more sympathetic activity(Vata) 

The cold vibrational frequency effects Kapha if the mindbody energy field is predisposed by producing more vibrational frequencies of static(lethargy), liquid(mucous), heavy(weight), slow/dull(fatigue), and slimy/smooth(nasal and chest congestion)  Sound familiar? Like many symptoms experienced during the winter

Nutrition and the Cold Quality

Nutrition that emphasizes the cold quality is deleterious to your health!

            Raw vegetable nutrition is not the best even though the "raw fooders" are insistent otherwise

            Cold drinks are NOT good  The worst is iced milk

            Ice is NOT nice  Everything at room temperature 

            Defer on the  ice in water at restaraunts in drinking water

            Cold interferes with digestion by cooling off our enzyme systems that operate best at body temperature slow/dull our absorption and assimilation of poorly digested foods ingested

From an energy science nutritional model there is much more to nutrition than offered by the current molecular or matter science nutritional model

The Chameleon: Our Biologic Energy Field

We take on the energy of the environment  Does that seem strange or unusual? Well, perhaps only because I'm putting the context of energy in the experience  But think about it  If it's hot out there, it's hot in here  Right?

My Friend's Experience

My gentle Kapha friend related his experience in moving to the Pacific Northwest(PNW) from the desert climate of California  He reflected on how nasal congestion was never an issue when living in Cali and makes sense doesn't it? In the hot and dry desert his predominant Kapha energy pattern which was cold was nourished by the hot and dry of the desert

But when he moved to the cold and wet(liquid) climate of the PNW, here he expereinced nasal congestion and stuffiness and just plain old lethargy(static)  It was just hard to get started  Perhaps we have had similar experiences during the winter months?

This is why people "go South for the winter"? Or why at the end of the winter season we get "the common cold"?

Our Biologic Energy Field:  The Chameleon

Our biologic energy field reflects our environmental energy field  If it's cold out there, you can bet it's cold in here   Even if we don't feel that way  It it's <fill in one of the 20 qualities> out there, it's <quality> in here

We come to a startling observation That the energy field and ourselves are intimately connected  As a matter of fact, the environment is merely an extension of our own biologic energy field  Said another way, our extended energy field outside us influences our "inside" energy field all the time

Skiing and Riots

If you ski you may find that after the day the skin is dry, rough due the aggravation of the imbalancing of the Vata energy pattern of movement  Skiing has the qualities of cold, light, mobile, subtle, rough, dry, and clear, all Vata primordial vibrational frequencies

Have you ever heard of a racial riot in midwinter? The hot quality fuels the mindbody and promotes anger and agitation  An imbalanced expression of Pitta, the energy pattern of transformation in the biologic energy field

Energy Science Nutrition

OK then, what's the difference between a piece of broccoli and climate, energy wise??  I would submit no difference

That the qualities of the broccoli are not different than a day of skiing experiencing cold, dry, rough, and mobile

Foods have a direct impact on our biologic energy fields just as the seasons and racial riots

Doesn't it make sense to respect nutritionally and energetically what we put into our mindbodies?
