A Simple Rule of Energy Science Nutrition
There are some basic tenets in nutrition that sometimes are unspoken but intuitively make absolute sense
One of these is "If you're not hungry, don't eat"
Makes a good deal of sense but I see patients struggle with this because there is an underlying myth that if we don't eat, bad things will happen to us
But if we think about appetite, it IS the mindbody's dialogue with us that the digestive fire or the enzyme system of the gastrointestinal(GI) tract is not ready for the experience of food
After all the mindbody does talk to us, we just have to tune into the messages that it sends us If we are busy in fear(somebody says we should eat, fatigue argues that we need more energy) then we have trouble interpreting the message(not hungry)
The energy science nutritional model states that no hunger implies that the transformative energy pattern of the mindbody is stressed and that foods will not be properly digested even if we send it down
And if we elect to go against the wisdom of the mindbody, the result is not pretty
The food languishes in the gut not going anywhere but to be parked in the Never Never land of toxic load that is debris that causes harm to the physiology And this is probably the mose salient argument for not eating
The food rather than nourishing our mindbody becomes unused toxic waste that goes everywhere we don't want it to go
And this dictum of not eating when not hungry is not just for when we are sick or stressed, it is applicable to a wide array of circumstances when perhaps food is not the best choice

Energy Science Nutrition Is Not About More Energy For You!
There is a tendency to misconstrue the term energy
With all the hoopla about energy drinks etc, there is a tendency to potentially look at this concept of energy science as a way to get more energy
There are important posits about the energy sciences as described by the Ayurvedic and Traditional Oriental disciplines
The mindbody is an energy field
By seeing ourselves as energy fields we enter a different way of relating to ourselves and others
When we see ourselves and foods as energy fields we begin to see the commonality we share with foods
The energy field is complex and typically doesn't respond quickly to outside manipulations such as nutrition
We don't get more energy by identifying ourselves as energy fields
Energy science nutrition helps direct our attention to how we can become more harmonious, more in balance, more in the state of grace, health and happiness than getting more energy
So please don't misinterpret more energy because you took an energy drink with the energy mindbody that we speak about at this blog Entirely different!

Eating Healthy?
Eating healthy is the mantra that I hear often in the office But the challenge is "What does eating healthy really mean?"
As we have blogged about this topic several times in the past
And now a thoughtful group at Fooducate asks this same question In the article they point out the obvious disconnect 9 out of 10 Americans feel they eat healthy but if that's the case why are 2 out of 3 of us obese or overweight?
Unfortunately the Fooducate folks bite on the same matter science stuff that we as a culture have been brainwashed into believing for decades and so the conclusion is, "The model of nutrition that we are using is not failing us, it's us that's the problem"
So my question is the same as it has been since the inception of this blog "Could it be we're operating with an incomplete model of nutrition?"
Since we don't have an alternative to our current matter science nutritional model we think that what we are using is correct
But there is a deeper reality about what it means to be human, an energy perspective
And that leads us to a better way of doing nutrition, from an energy science nutritional model
The Fooducate people are on the right track! They just have to be willing to step outside the box
Let's engage ourselves with seeing ourselves as energy fields as well Go to foodsheal to see how

Genes and The Energy Field of the Mindbody
The genetic material is an expression of the energy field of the body
When the energy field changes so does the genetic material
The genes are not stable but adapt, shift, change, and are plastic and malleable
Lifestyle nutritional behavioral changes in patterns of what we do changes genetic expression

Life Expectancy
A 90 year old fellow came in today for check and he related that he felt well and that he fully expected to make a 100 years
This is not unusual these days as the fastest growing segment of our population is said to be 90+
What was interesting in our conversation was that there is a lack of understanding of just how long we should live
According to the energy science of Ayurveda the expected life expectancy of the human is 120 years Now one can live longer or shorter than that expectation but that's the average
He mused that what must keep us living longer are the drugs that are given to us for high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease
To that point I reminded him that the pills don't improve health, they temporarily nip a problem but don't deal with the underlying cause that caused the problem to begin with
Presently people live longer unconsciously but the reason is that they make better choices regarding lifestyle behavior patterns, either becasue they were taught these as a child and continued to do them as adults
They may have also by serendipity made intuitively better food choices over the years than their counterparts who have less longevity
The bottom line is that we all have the potential to live to 120 years but unconsciously don't want to but if we choose consciously to make better lifestyle choices then there is a distinct possibility that we may
Where is the guidance for such longevity? The energy sciences hold the key, not the pharmaceutical companies or the matter sciences

Falling In Love With the Body
As you may know about six weeks ago I fractured my right humerus (upper arm bone) and it brought about many different insights about caring for an injured body part
The Gift of the Injured State
But let's reframe this Isn't an unhealthy state of the body an injured state? High cholesterol, being overweight, high PSA, acid indigestion(hyperacidity syndrome or GERD-gastroesophageeal reflux disease), a heart attack All of these are cries from inner space for help
The problem is that we deny that the body needs love and nourishment After all, it's a machine, right? A well oiled machine that has somehow learned how to think So treat the machine just like you treat a lump of castiro?
I believe we respect the body more than that, we just have to reframe ourselves How we view ourselves
The Body from an Energy Field View
First left helped right "It's OK honey, I'll help you out," says left to right As a matter of fact, in the energy science body of knowledge, the left is feminine and the right, masculine So each side is helping each other and participating in healing as the wounded side is nouristhed through the recovery from trauma
If this is difficult to conceive, think about your body as if it were a child And you loved that child very much So much you would do anything for your little child
When speaking to your child, you wouldn't think of saying, "Get a grip, kid Buck up and get in shape!" Or maybe we would unconsciously and wouldn't know it
Perhaps a better, kinder way to speak to our body is to express gratitude "Thanks my dear body for all you do for me I promise to take care of you and help you become (fill in the blank, eg in shape, less fat, healthier by reducing your cholesterol, etc) because I care so much for you and want the best for you"
A Natural Love Affair
Isn't that what a love affair is?
And the first most important aspect of this expression of love is to nourish the relationship, right?
Nourishment, either physically or emotionally, is the important part in any relationship and it should begin with the type of nutrition we use
Of course, my bias is that an energy science approach to nutrition using the foodsheal.com format is paramount to getting started and moving forward through this lifetime
This love affair aspect of healing may seem too far fetched for you especially if you haven't had an injured body part but try reorienting the way you speak to your body and have regular loving conversations with your body
As the say, "Get into the love!"

Some More On Home Made Yogurt
Today as I'm making a fresh batch of yogurt I realized I neglected some useful tidbits that can give you some energy science nutrtional guidance in the preparation and use
So here they are
The use of goat yogurt is a great starter for each batch Why? Goat's milk is nearest to human milk and so…ready?.. easier to digest
If exploratory using goat's milk instead of whole cow's milk would be a good base for preparing the heated milk(to 185 degrees and then cooled to 105 to 115 degrees to which you add the starter)
Using fresh starter each time ensures that the bacterial count of the yogurt will be rich
Due to the Pitta aggravating nature of yogurt, freshly made is the only way to go, but to really inhibit the negative sour effects of even freshly made yogurt, the use of Sucanat or Turbinado(crystallized cane sugars) can be important because the sweet taste helps balance the aggravating sour taste
If the yogurt is curdly and clearly not smooth in texture it means that there's probably too much cooking going on and that the incubation times are too long So try 10 hours instead of 12 hours
And yes, this does take some time to make the yogurt but after doing it, in a short time you can do a batch in about 15 minutes(tolal time; heating the milk and cooling it can be done while doing other things)

The Wonders of Fresh Home Made Yogurt
Many ethinic cultures on the planet use fresh yogurt and kefir as health promoting foods in their nutrition And there are very good reasons for doing so
The "Good" Guys
The value of yogurt is that it serves when freshly made a rich source of probiotic which is a population of "good bacteria" that reside in the bowel "Bad" bacteria at times overgrow the gut flora leading to poor digestion, absorption, and assimilation so it's important that the good flora flourishes and the bad are kept in check
Regular use of freshly made yogurt insures that the "good" bacteria are consistently replenished
You may have heard of yeast overgrowth and this is yet another factor that can lead to poor digestive fire(eliminating yeast laden bread products is a good idea in that it gives us more than we need so flatbreads are best or at least toasting the yeasted products)
Bowel flora is important in the concept of digestive fire and aids in bowel digestive function as well as providing important nutrients for our nutrition
Pasteurized yogurts should be avoided as pasteurization kills off the beneficial probiotic component of yogurt
Making Digestion Easy By Predigestion-Optimizing Digestive Fire
The value of yogurt comes in the predigestion of lactose and casein which we talked about a couple of days ago Hence the bacteria during the incubation phase of creating yogurt use the sugar lactose and the protein casein for food The lactose then doesn't bother the lactose intolerant and the casomorphin derivative from casein digestion can be less, hence affecting us less
Why freshly made?
Get maximal amount of probiotic in the yogurt(some bacteria die off after 4-5 days)
From an energy science view the build up of acidity occurs with aging yogurt even if refrigerated and this can become inflammatory
Even though fresh yogurt is not very acidic it's reasonable to use sucanat(crystallized cane sugar) with your freshly made yogurt to balance the residual acidity
How to get started?
Buy a yougurt maker(Donvier is a French brand but there are many) Recomended
YouTube has several videos on how to make your own yogurt
And based on the foodsheal.com food combining list, don't use fruit with yogurt
It's best not to use dry milk powder as the milk product as it is provoking to Vata Pitta
Here's a link for directions on making your own for trouble shooting
The greatest value is making your own yogurt is that we participate in our own health and this is a small but significant step in assuming responsibility for our health

Nutritional Cultural Miscues
Often cultural cuisines carry nutritional miscues that energetically effect health The energy science nutritional model can help us sort out how to avoid these miscues
Cultural Nutritional Problems
Here are some examples, see if you can pick out the culture from which they come(hint could be more than one culture)
Heavy reliance of tomatoes
Heavy use of cheeses
Cooked honey in pastry
Poor food combinations such as beans with cheese and meat, eggs with cheese and meat, fruit with any other food, potato with dairy
These are just examples of cultural leftovers(no pun intended) which can lead to poor health
Ongoing Perpetuation of Cultural Poor Health
A culture is our extended family and we can become quite emotionally tied to it Witness the nationalistic fervor now being exhibited(actually just a sophisticated form of tribalism)
But we intuitively know that we can pick up some not so good health habits from our immediate family of origin and the same is true I would submit from our extended family
Our cultural planetary populations are becoming merged and there is no more apparent place for making this observation than in the US We have long been known as the "melting pot" and our population is clearly heterogenous
Universal Health of the Planet
But if we step back and understand the inherent health problems by perpetuating these nutritonal miscues then we can improve not only our own health but the health of our extended family
An oft quoted Gandhi phrase, "Be the change you want to see in the world" applies here because by changing the way we do our lifestyles is mirrored not only in our immediate family but also to our extended family
What Can We Do?
Guided by the energy science nutritional approach there are many things we can do to change our personal health but by example our global health
Eat food according to your nutritional format (Vata, Pitta, Kapha)
Avoid poor food combining
Enhance digestive fire to "burn off mistakes or miscues"

Opiates and Cheese
The energy science can help us understand how to deal with this controversial topic about the potential addictive nature of opiates in milk
It makes sense that there is a sedative property in mother's milk or the human race would not be so advanced in numbers as it has become
Concentrated Forms of Opiates
Cheese is produced by acidifying milk and making a curd leaving the whey(watery protein) behind
The predominant protein in milk and therefore cheese is casein which if not completely digested will release in the gut as an opiate called casomorphin(BCM7) Opiates can produce a profound sense of pleasure
80% of cow's milk is casein Concentrated milk products(cheese, ice cream, milk chocolate) can have increased amounts of the addictive opiates or BCM7 proteins that link up to opiate receptors in the body, particularly the brain
Some interesting factoids
It takes 10 pounds of milk to make a pound of hard cheese(sour cheese)
It takes 3-4 pounds of milk to make one pound of milk chocolate A "chocoholic" is born
BCM7 is the powerful opiate held in any milk whether cow, buffalo, goat, or human Studies on cow's milk show that BCM7 is held to an amino acid named proline in A1 cows(tightly bound) and by histidine in A2 cows(loosely bound), so the latter can be more effective to produce the opiate effect
How about breads with gluten?
Interestingly gliadorphin from the digestion of gluten is similar to casomorphin both of which interact with opiate receptors in the brain, particularly those areas involved with speech and hearing, an important factor in children with autism, particularly if poor digestive fire is involved These byproducts of digestion will lead to exaggerated effects (ama in the energy science vernacular)
What To Do?
Bottom line: If you have a strong digestive fire, you'll deal with BCM7 early in the digestive process and more than likely won't be impacted by either form of milk, A1 or A2, or bread
If you have a poor digestive fire then either way BCM7 will be hanging around and an individual will potentially get the effects of casomorphin
So the energy science nutritional solution to the above, enhance digestive fire by:
If any heavy concentration of BCM7 is taken in on a day, avoid doing it again and again Allow the GI tract and the body to absorb the insult Don't pile on insult after insult after insult
If PK reduce the amount of dairy in your diet, avoiding the concentrated forms
Steaming or heating milk is a great idea
Never drink milk cold or with ice
Using a churan or a meal rich in cooling digestants or spices will help with digestion due to their impact on digestive fire
Using cardamom with warm milk helps digestion
Eat a nutritional format that is conducive to your energy makeup and avoid poor food combinations
