Fingers And Prostate Cancer

Fingers and PCA
I continuously learn from my patients since they bring interesting facts or experiences with them and give me a glimpse of their observations  Recently a fellow came in with a tidbit that speaks for elucidation

My patient told me about how the  British are famous for making unique observations in Nature and creating interesting conclusions so the observation that the increase in ring finger(Water) length over that of the index finger and its association with prostate cancer is intriguing

Those with longer index fingers(Air) were a third less likely to get prostate cancer according to a report in the British Journal of Cancer

The matter science medical model explanation is that there appears to be a pair of genes that are responsible for finger length and reproductive layer growth

This factoid is completely explained from the energy science medical model  There are 5 elements corresponding to physical body parts that energetically comprise the universe: Space(thumb), Air(index), Fire(middle), Water(ring), and Earth(earth)

Since Water is more dense than Air more Kapha is represented in the anatomic setup described where the length of the ring finger represents a proclivity to create  more density in the reproductive layer(hence tumor or mass) or prostate

But Water is also an element of Pitta hence inflammation is also factored into the equation and we know that to create a tumor anywhere in the physiology we must have all three energy patterns of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha represented in the organ

So men with prominent ring fingers longer than the index have the propensity to form inflammation and mass in the prostate or for that matter more likely in other parts of the body as well

Energetically the same holds true for the feet but this was not discussed in the report

The energy science will continually help elucidate findings that come up from mattter science observations that are interesting but difficult to understand

New Year’s Nutritional Resolutions – Six Steps

Bigstock_Lose_Weight_10803752Yesterday we talked about a resolution to simply pay attention to how foods affect us  That in paying attention to the foods consumed that if they make us feel poorly then we have a choice because nobody, I'm convinced, wants to feel bad

So pain or discomfort will dictate to us what foods we eat  Now we can refine those choices looking at the nutritional formats but we can also just simply be aware remembering that it's not good or bad, right or wrong  It's just a choice

We all want our freedom of choice

And it's OK

It's the resolve or resolution that works  Resolve actually in this setting becomes intention

There are ways to support lifestyle choice change

Notes of reminder of the change want to see happen on the mirror or at work

Someone to help with the change intended

Focus of attention on the matter every day

Develop creative ways to make the change happen

Forgive yourself for not getting the change to happen right away

            Persistence

Happy 2011

Bigstock_New_Year___Background_10712588

We only learn by contrast  Can't know hot if we haven't experienced cold, can't know feeling  good if we haven't experienced feeling bad

Nobody wants to feel bad in life  That's what takes them to doctors  To feel better right?

Feeling Nutritionally Poorly

And just as foods are us, there are some that don't make us feel our best

The challenge is find out which ones they are

By seeing the qualities in food as the same ones that comprise us there becomes a common meeting place, where the qualities of us merge with the qualities of the foods that we consume

If we have the hot quality in our physiology in large amount(Pitta) then eating lots of foods that carry the hot quality will lead us to excess or imbalance of the hot quality

Learning by Contrast

If excess shows up in our awareness(heartburn) then we have a choice, leave the hot alone by choosing different foods that are more balancing

So experiencing hot in feeling bad gives us a choice with the emphasis that this choice is not right or wrong, good or bad, it's not breaking the rules, it's not being a bad person, not about being judged or judging ourselves  It's just a choice

Even though this sounds simplistic, in its simplicity is elegance for it will become the way we "convince" ourselves about change in lifestyle behavior nutritional patterns

A Nutritional Resolution

So how's this for a new year's resolution?

During the year of 2011 I resolve to pay attention to how I feel when I eat foods

If they make me feel bad, I then have a choice, continue to feel bad or make a different choice  And it's your choice

Until tomorrow  Happy New Year             I love you all  Dr Bill

The Biologic Paradigm Shift

There have been rumblings in "think circles" for some time about the nature of what it means to be a biological being and I thought it would be useful to dialogue about this as it is paramount to our health as we enter this second decade of the 21st century

It has been 100 years since Einstein stated his famous equation E=mc2  Woven into this mathematical statement is the understanding that matter and energy are interchangeable, indeed there is simultaneity of matter and energy; that what we see as matter can be viewed as energy as well

The Biologic Matter Field

Our current vernacular of seeing the human physiology is matter science, that is an expression of the molecular measurement of the body  For healing purposes assessment of the biology is done by way of measuring how much is wrong and how much has to be done to correct the problem Bigstock_Anatomy_Transparant_Muscles_W_251396 The use of measurement makes this science quantitative, that is how much in contrast to the energy science medical model

This form of science uses deductive reasoning or logic, using infromation from the general data base and inferring from the general to the particular

And all of our ancillary healing disciplines including nutrition and psychology become extensions of this matter science medical model  And its vocabulary is comfortably mainstream

The Biologic Energy Field

But if we put on our energy science glasses we can see the physical body as an energy field  The  problem is we can't see if we can't describe

Energized man 10.21.09

So in short, we need a vernacular, an authentic well established vocabulary to help us with understanding ourselves as biologic energy fields The Ayurvedic and the Traditional Oriental Medicine(TOM) disciplines do just that  They give us a vocabulary by which we can talk about ourselves as energy fields

The energy science system of healing utilizes inductive reasoning, that is moving from the particular to the general in deciding what treatment options are avaiable  So for example, once the assessment of fever after eating has been made, we can understand that this is inflammation moving into the bloodstream, knowledge which comes from our general information

The energy science is qualitative in contrast with its spousal science, that is, the healing is done by understanding what the person is feeling

Our Biologic Shift

Our shift in how we do healing is soon to come when we see the body as both matter and energy fields because both disciplines offer unique and valuable ways of healing

But this shift in seeing the simultaneity of our bodies as both will require a conscious process

And the paradigm shift will bring about a complete medical healing system not constrained by the limitations we presently experience  One of the ways to easily experience the simultaniety in a non threatening way is to take up nutrition and experience for oneself

And this will take us into the 21st century

2011 We Want Back Our Responsibilty For Health

Family health Nowadays it seems that we are all concerned about our health and what we can do to help ourselves to improve our health if we are having challenges

It's basically boils down to our instinctive need for survival,  doesn't it?

Participation

But from my vantage point as  a practicing physician and surgeon, I'm seeing people who want more than better health  Many want to be co-partners in the process  These people want to buy in to a participatory role

Men and women both ask when confronted with a medical problem,  “What can I do to participate in my healing?”

Health in a pill

Just witness the burgeoning health supplement industry  And every day I see a patient or more who are on forms of supplements to improve their health status

There's an issue here that suggests we should have always had that responsibility  That no one really ever took it away  But we didn't know how we could become responsible and neither do the pharmaceutical firms and sometimes physicians

We do know one thing  Health is contained in a pill  We have been taught that much

Hence the supplemental industry has come to represent health in a pill but it has allowed us a segue to become responsible

Resolution

I believe that as we enter 2011 there will be again resolutions for improving our health in one way or another  Exercising, changing nutrition, meditation, supplements etc

There is however three fundamental principles that we should not forget

            Foods heal

Incompatable food combinations are not good

Digestive fire is an important physiological aspect that should not be disregarded

These are worthy of resolve because they get to the heart of gaining responsibility for our health  Not just a pill but a way of life

Can Foods Make Us Sick?

I think we have all had the experience of not feeling real great and not knowing why  Or perhaps not feeling so great and realizing that it's related to what we ate

"Of course foods can make us sick!" we say  There is so much evidence now from the matter science nutritional model from so many studies that foods can affect us in adverse ways  This can be particularly relevant around the holidays due to the presence of foods that can adversely effect us

Unfriendly Foods

Here's an incomplete list

Refined sugar eg candy in all its forms, chocolate(sugar camoflaged with chocolate)

White flour eg pastries in most forms, most breads

Carbonated drinks aka refined sugar with fizziness

In addition  from an energy science nutritional view

Foods incompatable for our unique body makeup

Foods incompatable with one another(eg fruit with other foood, beans with cheese and meat)

The confusing thing is that many people including perhaps ourselves don't get sick from these lists as above  What gives?

The Role of Digestive Fire

The answer is digestive fire  If we have various levels of digestive strength or power then we can stave off feeling poorly, at least for a little while

But like any fire in Nature, if we continue to abuse it the ramifications are certain  We will begin to feel poorly  So it's not just one or two days of abusive food selections, but multiple days in a row

Soon the fire becomes dimmed with all the wet logs that we have place on it and when that happens symptoms are sure to come our way

So at times people may find that exercising during the holidays helps them feel better Why?  Exercise stokes digestive fire and we hold off the ravages of feeling poorly

Choice

In the end this information is to not as much forbid us from the foods that make us sick but rather make us better observers of the process of nutrition and allow us to make better choices in the future if we so choose

It hinges on seeing that foods can physiologically make us feel poorly and that we have within our grasp the ability to change that very fact about our nutrition

The Coming Age of Energy Science Nutrition

Energized man 10.21.09
There is a palpable shift that is becoming apparent as I read materials on the internet and visit with colleagues both on the matter and energy science sides of the fence

The appreciation is this:  what we are currently doing with just a matter science view is not working  The healers know and the health consumers know

Three shifts are being recognized in my tours

Selective Nutrition

We've come a long ways since talking about "selective individual nutrition" that we witnessed with the blood diet  We are now seeing selective nutrition from an energy science point of view which becomes a more refined approach grounded on a solid scientific energy foundation

Merging of MindBody

And now we are beginning to see the body in a different way, not just a matter field but simultaneously an energy field  When we see the body in an energy way we will begin to understand fully how the mind and body are intimately spliced  How we cannot separate them as we currently do  This will have far reaching implications as we think about disease

Use of Foods as Disease Treatment

And as we progress we will be visiting such concepts as antiinflammatory nutrition, anticongestive nutrition, and antidegenerative nutrition  And this is possible because we see the body differently  Physicians are now thinking in these terms as we go forward

Acid Indigestion and Being Overweight

Bigstock_Terrible_Hunger_3871466
Ever wondered why some get heartburn and others don't? The energy science nutritional model can help our understanding

The answer is oftentimes mucous  The stomach has enough mucous to protect itself from too much acidity prodcuced

Which ones of us will produce such protective mucous? Those of strong Kapha constitution that have a predisposition to create mucous in the first place

Kapha Imbalance

The mucous is not often produced out of protection as much it is created due to the Kapha imbalance in the first place The Kapha imbalance leads to a number of symptoms such as obesity, increased mucous in sinuses, upper airways, and stomach

Which leads to the relationship of being overweight and acid indigestion  At times people with strong Kapha constitutions have minor symptoms of heartburn but don't take anything for it due to the excess mucous in the stomach  At other times the acidity is so strong that medication is necessary

Appetite, Obesity, and Taste

But it is this relationship of acid indigestion with appetite that can drive the overweight condition

An increased appetite may be associated with such a hot stomach that is not easily satiated such that overeating becomes a distinct possibility

So there we have it  An overweight condition can be significantly worsened by  excess acidity due to its effect on appetite

What provokes this acidity? The sour and salty tastes so Kapha should stay away from these tastes or simply follow the nutritional formats laid out at foodsheal.com

We cannot understand this facet of obesity from our matter science nutritional model

Holiday Greetings From Santa

Santa Shhhhhh
Santa's Kapha physique brings us the joy of celebration for this time of year and reminds us of the great value of the energy pattern and the difficulties that Kapha has

Just knowing this about ourselves can help stave off the weiries of the holidays and get in touch with what it feels like to feel

It's difficult to feel if we are engaged in mental activity. Yet the way we get in touch with what our health is like is by feeling.

So when we are actively engaged in conversation with ourselves or with others it makes it difficult to feel what is happening when eating. How does the food taste? What are the textures? What are the aromas? Am I chewing the food completely? Am I full and satisfied? Do I need more food?

These are just examples of the eating process  It asks, "Am I paying attention?"

There is good information to suggest that the more attentive we are to the eating process, the more engaged we are, the better our digestion of the food

Makes sense doesn't it? If your friend is talking with you and you are fully engaged with her, you will digest the ideas that she has. You have paid attention, really paid attention

So my friends, shhhh implies every once in a while pay attention to eating
