Calorie Counting
As a measurement are calories of any significant import? Or is it an old hand me down concept that has little relevance as we work through nutrition for the 21st century?
We currently live in the world of measurement when it comes to nutrition How many carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, proteins, fats Look at the label and you'll see our attestation to the numbers that are supposedly driving our selection decisions
But does this labeling really help with our decision making I would suggest that it doesn't at all That in fact we make our decisions based on the emotional appeal that the foods have and not what the numbers say
But we are obsessed with numbers and measurements because the FDA has mandated that the consumer must be forewarned about what's in the package
Now the British have begun questioning the calorie counting business and are bringing to the fore some very appropriate discussion http://bbc.in/axkQEQ
The matter science approach to measurement has its value but from an energy science nutritional view it's not so much the measurement as how the food affects the individual who is consuming it
The ultimate question from the energy science nutritional view is, "How does the food make one feel?"
Since we are not used to sensing our foods and what they do to us the next best thing is to get some guidance See foodsheal.com
If I know a lot about broccoli in terms of measurements of the above molecular ingredients but have no idea what it does to my own physiology, then I would conclude that the meausurements are useless

Carbonated Drinks and Acidity
The American pasttime Carbonated drinks
We see them everywhere Large delivery trucks pulling up to grocery store outlets or convenience stores, vending machines, cafeteria lines You name a place and we'll find them as part of our daily lives
From an energy science view the problem is that they are imbalancing for all of us; that is, they produce dis-ease in the physiology
Why? It's due to the acidity and recently the Fooducate blog had a nice post on how acidic these foods are http://bit.ly/aGQwPp
This damaging effect to the enamel of our teeth is a health issue similar to smoking and our obesity Tooth decay can be related to consumption
I recently discussed the problem of the sugar but the other problem is acidity
The acidity affects the teeth but also over time will begin provoking the stomach and produce heartburn and acid reflux or GERD(gastroesophageal reflux disease)
What can we do?
Limit our intake of carbonated drinks
Brush your teeth after consumption if we do drink them
Find substitutes for the"fizzies"
Notice how you feel after consumption Do you feel gassy, bloated, have heartburn?
Try not to use ice with the drink
Educate your children

Visual Learners Beware
When we try to remember an event, we begin to conjure up images We're looking for a word and begin seeing it as we spell it Or we're preparing for something and visualize ourselves doing it
We all know who we are as visual learners, don't we?
The energy pattern associated with the visual channel is Pitta, the energy pattern of transformation
As we've talked in the past Pitta is associated with a strong appetite; so strong that if really out of control, they would eat cardboard
So what happens when Pitta's visual channel is treated to a nice bag of potato chips?
And then let's throw in that Pitta happens to be a little bit hungry as he/she strolls through the aisles of the grocery store
Think that there might be a good place for marketing to that appetite with packaging of foods
Well that seems to be the case In an October article in the Journal of Consumer Psychology people eat more food when there are a number of items on the packaging
Visual cues do play a role http://bit.ly/cQNPwb
The article displays an aspect of the energy science as it typifies the Pitta visual channel in how visual packaging plays on its nutritional appetite
So what's a Pitta to do
Realize that the strong appetite can be your nemesis
Don't grocery shop if you're really hungry(if you are get something healthy to nibble on while shopping)
Recognize your strong visual channel and witness what it's urging
Don't eat from a container(the bottomless pit until gone) Always portion out of the container
Just by knowing yourself as this energy pattern and its drawbacks can be very helpful

Pork Out If You’re An Athlete!
A young man came in to see me about an inflammatory problem in the urinary tract and as we reviewed his bowel symptoms it was apparent that he had inflammatory symptoms there as well
As is often the case inflammation mirrors one another in the two channels since the elimination of the imbalances in the GI tract often takes place through the urinary system
"When I was playing ball in college, I never seemed to have problems I could eat anything,'' he related "But now in the last couple of years since graduation, it seems that I'm beginnning to have all these symptoms"
"When you're exercising a great deal, the digestive fire becomes ramped up and so you can get away with a lot of foods that would otherwise cause imbalance," I explained
"Now the digestive fire is less and you begin to experience all the imbalances that were cleared by your strong digestion earlier."
Digestive Fire and Taking Care of Business
When the enzyme system in the gut is strong it can literally deal with poisons just like a campfire with wet logs
The important thing here is that we will always be challenging our GI tract with imbalancing choices and the way to remain healthy is to make better choices and ensure that our GI system is optimal with respect to its power
How to keep the digestive fire healthy? Here are some suggestions
Regular exercise
Occasional juice fast
Eating according to nutritional format for mindbody makeup
Avoid poor food combinations
Avoid ice with water
Biggest meal at noon
Use of a churan with meals and cooking

Is Sugar the Demon?
1. Candy became widely available only 130 years ago. Until then, people would make their own fudge or caramel at ome.
2. Candy is a health scapegoat – 100 years ago, doctors blamed candy for the spread of polio. In the mid to late 20th century it was blamed for tooth decay. Now it is blamed for obesity.
3. Candy accounts for only 6% of the added sugar in the American diet. Soft drinks and juice account for 46%.
4. Candy is the 575th most popular name for girls.
5. Candy lacks the “health halo” of granola bars and fruit juice. But, nutritionally there is much less difference among them than would initially seem.
6. There are entire blogs dedicated to candy. Popular ones include Candy Addict, Candy Blog, and Candy Professor.
7. It’s unbelievable now, but candy once was advertised as health food. “Eat Tootsie Rolls — The Luscious Candy That Helps Beat Fatigue.”
8. The world’s largest chocolate bar was manufactured in Armenia last month and weighed in at 9,722.39 lbs., setting a new Guinness World Record.
9. John Candy (1950 – 1994) struggled most of his adult life with overeating, including sweets. Obesity related health complications killed him at the age of 43.
10. Candy isn’t always good. Just ask Hansel and Gretel.

Nutrition and Movement
This week's JAMA(Journal of the American Medical Association) has an article that addresses the imbalance seen in the overweight condition that supports prior articles on movement as a necessary ingredient to this problem
This was an evaluation of lifestyle intervention on severely obese participants and specifically looked at the role of physical activity along with change in nutrition over a one year period of time
Not surprisingly there was a clinically significant weight loss and favorable changes in cardiometabolic risk factors
The energy science medical model tells us that the overweight condition is a Kapha imbalance and the vibrational frequencies of Kapha are heavy, slow/dull, static, gross, cold, slimy/smooth, oily, liquid, dense, cloudy and soft
The qualities of slow/dull and static along with the other grounding qualities demand that in order for Kapha to begin the journey toward balance that MOVEMENT is necessary if any headway is to happen in solving our obesity problem
It's great to see the corroboration of the matter and energy science medical models It helps validate the energy science model but it also shows how the two disciplines can support one another in solving some of our most pressing and urgent medical health needs
Other aspects to this study
The process of clearing severe Kapha imbalances is a slow process that requires patience and good support
Lifestyle behavior patterns need to be addressed in the management of Kapha imbalances
Suggests that the lifestyle approach can better address the obesity problem than bariatric surgery

Nutritional Fun
No one wants to feel confined and restricted
We all want our freedom and want to have fun in life This was a scenario I recently painted for an audience talking about energy science nutrition We talked about this before but bears repeating because this very point resonated so much with the audience and was articulated eloquently by one of the members of the audience
"I'm taking one thing away from your talk tonight," she related "It's that we're not restricted to this format, that these formats that you've shown us are guidelines and not rules That to me is very freeing and takes the pressure off."
Think about it If we restrict ourselves the mind eventually begins thinking "reward" for a job well done Celebrate is the response and usually it's foods that are problematic The boomerang effect is in effect
But what if we don't restrict, but simply choose different foods
And then we reintroduce those foods that are in the no list in the format, for example, PK
And we witness, how do we feel? If we don't feel well, then we have a choice, don't we? We didn't have a choice before, but when we feel bad we have a choice to do it again and not feel as well or make a different choice the next time
Now I think this may sound like a "nutritional Pollyanna" but patients tell me that they notice differences when they eat out of the no column after they have been off those foods for a while There are those who even before they see the nutritional format say they intentionally stay away from certain foods because they make them feel bad
Perhaps we try too hard with this whole nutritional thing Perhaps we should lighten up and have some fun with our mindbodies and ask how them how they feel rather than telling it what we're going to do to them
In this way nutrition becomes something not that we fear but what we enjoy, that is, enjoying our freedom to choose and explore
Have you found that there are certain foods that you naturally avoid? Are they on the no list? Have you ever purposefully ingested those foods to see if you could reproduce those sensations again?

Osteoporosis: The Value of the Energy Science Approach
Older women with healthy bones may not need frequent bone scans http://lat.ms/aAGN4M
This is a great matter science observation but the question oftentimes is why?
Since the matter science medical model doesn't have a way to separate us into uniqueness we are all lumped together, leading the reader of above such reports to be quizzical but left with tucking this information back somewhere as a curiosity
The energy science medical model helps segregate us into Vata Pitta and Kapha energy patterns and creates uniqueness for each of us
So how do we apply our VPK paradigm understanding to the above information?
Kapha, energy pattern of stability, when dominant in the physiology produces strong joints, ligaments and bones We find robust strong athletes as part of this group
Since Kapha dominant men and women have physiologically healthy dense bones, the likelihood of osteoporosis in this population subset is slim and none
Vata dominant men and women have much more proclivity to osteoporosis and osteopenia due to the lightness of frame and bone Vata energy is dominant in the colon where minerals are absorbed and if the colonic mucosa is not absorptive due to Vata imbalances generated over the years, bone problems are likely
Are you a strong well muscled individual? Or are you more light framed? If you're the latter and have not had a bone mineral density, now's the time!

Perfect Nutrition
From an energy science nutritional view there is nothing wrong with foods; it's the consumer of the foods that makes the choice
Sooo… if we the consumers are to use foods as medicine and create for ourselves perfect nutrition then it will require that we stop blaming fast food shops, griping about too much candy for Halloween, complaining about this or that
When we can see that even at times a candy bar can be medicinal or that fast foods are balancing to Vata Pitta once or twice per week then we can appreciate it's not the molecules that are at fault but rather those who are making the choices
Sooo….. the fundamental question is how can we become better choicemakers regarding our nutrition? So that we can enjoy the pleasure of perfect nutrition
The answer is through an energy science nutritional format at foodsheal.com
But what about the drive to have our freedom, to make our own choices, to not be regimented to any one particular format?
To that I respond, "Great!!" The best way to figure out how our choices lead us away from perfect health is to find out how our bodies FEEL when we make choices that are not in alignment with our mindbody makeyup
Then our choices will show us which foods shouldn't be used all the time and those that are more valuable for us For example, I had several pieces of Halloween chocolate last night and today my GI tract told me that I had overdone it But what the heck it was fun and I now know more about what happens when I overdo it
Have you had the experience of eating foods that cause you physical symptoms? Have you made alterations in eating behavior since that time? Do you revisit and see what happens if you do it again?
